I had been putting it off...
But we were coming down on diapers...
So it was either another month of diapers,
or just give in (really-me give in),
and start potty training!
We like to be out and about a lot.
And staying at home for a week just didn't sound inviting.
(Or even loosing the ease of diapers-they can be so convenient!)
But, Zachary seemed ready.
He always woke up from naps and bedtime dry.
He used to complain about his tummy hurting,
so we wold tell him to go in his closet and go to the bathroom in his diaper-
and he would!
Our main problem:
The toilet.
He did not like the toilet.
He did not like the toilet.
We have had a little seat you put on top of it for a while.
I could never get him to sit on it.
So got him the Lighting McQueen little one.
He helped pick it out and buy it.
Then we crossed out fingers it worked!
Really we had been thinking about potty training for a while. I just needed the right week to start. The week of July 9 I had nothing. My days were free to stay home and just hangout on the toilet with Z.
We ran out of diapers on Sunday night. He used his last one! (I needed to make sure I could not go back on my word too.) And he knew it. We had been talking about it for a few days. That he was using his last diaper and then he needed big boy pants. He was excited to potty train and would excitingly say that when his diapers were gone he was going to potty train. Really he had no idea what was in store for him. :)
Monday, July 9 morning.
I put him in his new underwear.
Things were good until he KNEW he needed to go.
And then there was a meltdown for one of Jane's diapers.
(He has worn one of hers before in the car when that is all we have had.)
Luckily there was no supply downstairs and the gate was closed so he could not get upstairs.
He was running around crying for her diaper.
I felt so bad.
Then he was out of sight in the kitchen and he stopped crying and then he came to
me wet. We then sat on the toiet and talked about going potty in it so we don't have accidents.
He did great after that.
He only had that first accident and one later that evening on the tile!
Yay! Nothing ever on the new carpet!!
And then for two days he would come to me after naps with his underwear
just a little wet, but never his bed! He would always get out of bed and then when coming to find me
go a little.
He can hold it for a long time.
And don't tell him to "hurry to the bathroom" when he has to go.
He tells me we have to go "slow."
It's funny because he now likes the seat on the big toliet the best.
And just uses the Lighting one for a stool.
We did a sticker chart and treats.
He finished up the one sticker chart and wanted to start another.
He didn't even care that he didn't go to the store and pick
out a matchbox car yet.
Dum-dums were the choice of treats!
But again, he didn't really care about getting a treat every time.
Overall he has been really good with it.
It think it helped for us to wait until we both seemed ready.
I did not want to have to do the first week three times like
some people do!

He did so good that we went camping that Friday.
More on that one later!
